Heaven and earth do not unite.
The small departs, the great approaches.
Misfortune, but not through fault.
The Judgment
Heaven above, earth below — the natural order, yet here it creates separation rather than harmony. What should connect remains apart. This is the condition of standstill: not mere difficulty, but a fundamental disconnection between opposing forces that should be working together.
This hexagram describes periods when worthy efforts find no reception, when clear communication meets only misunderstanding, when the natural flow of exchange between different levels or kinds of people breaks down entirely. It is not a time for forcing connection or trying harder with the same methods.
The standstill is not permanent, though it may feel so. What appears as misfortune often prepares the ground for a more authentic unity. When false harmonies dissolve, space opens for relationships based on something more solid than convenience or convention.
The Image
Heaven and earth do not unite. The superior man falls back upon his inner worth to escape the difficulties.
When external conditions offer no support, the only reliable ground is internal. This is not retreat into isolation but a strategic withdrawal to what remains intact when circumstances turn hostile.
The superior man in such times does not waste energy lamenting the lack of recognition or trying to force doors that will not open. Instead, he deepens what is already strong within himself, knowing that changed external conditions will eventually call forth these developed qualities.
