14: Ta Yu

This hexagram shows fire burning above heaven — clarity illuminating the vast expanse of possibility. It represents a time when resources, influence, or understanding have accumulated to an exceptional degree. The question is not whether this abundance is deserved, but what obligations it creates. Great possession differs from mere accumulation. It implies a relationship between what one holds and what the situation requires. The fire above suggests that this abundance should make things clearer, not more complex — that resources properly held become a form of service. The danger in such times is neither loss nor inadequacy, but the subtle corruption that comes from treating abundance as an end rather than a means. What appears to be owned may, in a deeper sense, own the possessor. The hexagram counsels a kind of stewardship: holding much while remaining free of it.
