20: Kuan

This hexagram presents the image of one who stands elevated, able to see clearly what others cannot perceive from their position. It is the condition of contemplation — not idle gazing, but the focused attention that penetrates to essential patterns. True observation requires both distance and stillness. From too close, we see only fragments; in motion, we see only blur. The contemplative stance allows the deeper currents to become visible — the tendencies that will shape what is to come. The contemplation described here is not passive. It is the preparation for right action, the gathering of understanding that precedes effective intervention. What appears from below as detachment is actually the most practical form of engagement.
