Thunder beneath heaven.
Innocence prevails. Act without calculation.
The Judgment
This hexagram reveals the power that resides in genuineness β not naivety, but the clarity that comes from being aligned with one's authentic nature. When action arises spontaneously from this alignment, it carries an authority that no amount of scheming can match.
Innocence here does not mean ignorance of consequences, but freedom from the distortions that self-interest introduces. The mind that calculates each move for advantage often misses what the situation actually requires. The innocent response, emerging directly from understanding, proves more effective than cleverness.
Yet this state cannot be manufactured or maintained through effort alone. It appears when the heart is clear and the circumstances are ready. To act with innocence when conditions do not support it leads to disaster. To hesitate when genuine innocence is possible wastes the moment entirely.
The hexagram warns against actions motivated by expected gain. What comes from innocence brings its own reward, but seeking that reward directly destroys the innocence that makes it possible.
The Image
Under heaven thunder rolls. The superior man, rich in virtue, nourishes all things according to the time.
Thunder moves through the sky without calculation, following the natural laws that govern its expression. It does not choose where to strike based on what it might gain, yet its effects are precisely what the moment requires.
To nourish according to the time means responding to what is actually needed rather than what one thinks should be needed. This requires setting aside preconceptions about how things ought to unfold and attending carefully to how they are unfolding.
