Thunder above heaven.
Great power moves in righteousness.
Strength without restraint brings harm.
The Judgment
This hexagram shows thunder rolling above heaven β raw power given voice and direction. Four strong lines have gathered below, pressing upward with accumulated force. This is not the quiet potential of the creative principle, but power that has already begun to manifest and demands expression.
Great power creates its own dangers. The very strength that enables decisive action can overwhelm the judgment needed to use it well. When force feels limitless, the temptation is to solve every problem through its application. Yet true greatness lies not in the magnitude of power but in its restraint and proper timing.
The conditions favor bold action, but only when that action serves something beyond mere self-assertion. Power divorced from principle becomes arbitrary force. Power aligned with what is right and necessary becomes a force for genuine transformation.
The Image
Thunder is in the upper air above heaven. The superior man does not take a step which is not according to ritual.
Thunder above heaven suggests power that has risen beyond earthly constraints yet remains within cosmic order. The superior man understands that great strength requires even greater discipline.
Ritual here means not empty ceremony but conscious limitation β the willingness to constrain one's actions according to principles that transcend immediate desire. When power is abundant, the greatest test is choosing not to use it when such restraint serves a higher purpose.
