The light sinks beneath the earth.
In darkness, preserve what matters most.
The Judgment
This hexagram shows fire beneath the earth — light that has been covered, intelligence that must work in concealment. The outer world grows hostile to clarity and truth. What was once openly expressed must now be guarded and protected.
This is not a time for bold declarations or public stands. The wise person recognizes when circumstances have shifted and adapts accordingly, not from cowardice but from a deeper understanding of how to preserve what is essential. The light has not been extinguished; it has gone underground.
The superior person in such times maintains inner clarity while appearing to conform. This is not deception but discretion — the recognition that some truths can only survive by being temporarily hidden. Perseverance here means holding to one's principles while waiting for conditions that will allow them to emerge again.
The Image
The light has sunk into the earth. The superior man, in his intercourse with the multitude, veils his light, yet still shines.
Light buried in earth does not cease to be light — it simply works in a different way. The superior person learns to be present among others without revealing everything, to participate without compromising what is most important.
This veiling is not duplicity but wisdom. Just as a seed must be buried to grow, certain insights and values must be protected from hostile conditions until the time is right for their expression. The art lies in remaining true while appearing ordinary.
