Fire above, lake below.
In small matters, fortune.
Opposition that does not destroy.
The Judgment
This hexagram presents the image of fundamental contradiction: fire rises while water seeks the lowest places. Yet this is not the opposition of enemies but of complementary forces — each following its nature without malice or compromise.
When such opposition appears in human affairs, the temptation is either to force agreement or to abandon all connection. Both responses miss the essential point. True opposition can coexist when each party remains authentic to its nature while recognizing the legitimacy of what differs.
In small matters, progress is possible precisely because the stakes allow for flexibility. Great undertakings founder on irreconcilable differences, but modest efforts can find ways to honor what opposes without requiring its transformation. The wisdom lies in distinguishing between opposition that enriches and opposition that merely obstructs.
The Image
Fire above, water below — opposition. The superior man seeks common ground while maintaining his distinctiveness.
Fire and water do not become each other, yet both serve essential functions in the natural order. Their opposition creates the very tensions that make life possible — neither the uniformity of all fire nor all water, but the dynamic balance of both.
To follow this principle in human relations requires abandoning the desire for others to think as we think. Instead, one seeks the deeper harmony that can emerge when authentic differences are acknowledged rather than suppressed or attacked.
