6: Sung

This hexagram shows heaven above and water below — two forces moving in fundamentally different directions. Heaven rises while water descends, creating the conditions where conflict becomes inevitable. This is not mere disagreement but structural opposition: a situation where sincere efforts pull against each other. Conflict here is not always avoidable, but it can be approached with wisdom. The inferior position belongs to water — yielding, finding the lower ground, moving around obstacles rather than through them. The superior position belongs to heaven — maintaining clarity and perspective, refusing to be drawn into reactive patterns. The key insight is that most conflicts cannot be resolved by victory alone. They require a third element: the intervention of someone who stands apart from both sides and can see what neither contestant perceives. Without this mediating principle, even justified positions become distorted by the heat of opposition.
