60: Chieh

This hexagram shows water above lake, a natural image of containment. The lake accepts what flows into it but does not overflow its banks. This is limitation that serves life rather than constraining it. True limitation is not imposed from outside but grows from understanding. Like the lake that knows its capacity, effective restraint emerges from recognizing what can actually be sustained. The person who grasps this principle finds that boundaries become sources of strength rather than frustration. Yet there is a crucial distinction to be drawn. Limitation that springs from wisdom differs entirely from limitation that stems from rigidity or fear. The first creates form that allows content to flourish; the second creates only emptiness.
