7: Shih

This hexagram shows one strong line commanding five yielding lines — the structure of necessary authority. It represents organized effort directed toward a legitimate goal, whether in conflict, crisis, or any situation requiring collective action under unified direction. The army succeeds not through force alone but through discipline, clear hierarchy, and shared purpose. The weak lines do not represent weakness but the willing subordination that makes coordinated action possible. Without this voluntary yielding to command, no group effort can achieve its aim. Success depends entirely on the character of the leader and the justice of the cause. A worthy commander with righteous purpose can accomplish what seems impossible. An unworthy leader, no matter how capable, sows the seeds of eventual defeat. The hexagram warns: authority is granted to serve something greater than itself.
