I Ching Insight Frequencies- Mid October News Overview
October 17, 2026 · Rich Costello

Welcome to the mid October version of the I Ching Insight Frequencies, a bi-weekly newsletter where I look at the top news and current events over the past two weeks based on the most frequent coin toss data. This sequence originates from a random coin toss generator and is filtered through the I Ching Insight news aggregator. I use the most frequent sequence from the random tosses. You can view the data from the first half of October here.
From October 1 - 15 the most frequent I Ching coin toss sequence was Primary Hexagram 3. Line 2 transforming into Hexagram 60. So let’s jump right in and figure out what this all means in relaion to news and current events during the past couple weeks.
Primary Hexagram 3, often referred to as Difficulty in the Beginning, initial challenges, or, as the ancient texts refer to it, Sprouting. Think of a blade of grass or a newly cracked seedling forcing its way through the soil to get its first ray of light. Some get through, many don’t, and this is what the oracle is seeing in the headlines over the past few weeks. As I referenced in my last post, Trump and politics seem to own the news cycle lately, but if you look at the big picture and read between the lines (which is the nature of the I Ching), other emerging stories stand out this October. Energy security, the Mideast conflict and the never-ending Ukraine war are just a start. The emerging Saudi/Houthi conflict and the Democrat congressional leadership actively “measuring the drapes” in anticipation of their return to power in ’27 are also prevalent on the radar.
So the continuing dumpster fire that is the Russia/Ukraine war has taken center stage again with the sudden diesel fuel crisis. It’s a crisis sparked by the Iran conflict and the turbulence in the Strait of Hormuz, and exacerbated by Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries. The irony here is that one of the literal meanings of Hexagram 3 is energy that is blocked! The oracle couldn’t make this any clearer. Peace talks stalled. Progress stalled. Zelensky attacking Russian refineries, Putin bombing Kiev, the Department of War tipping the scale with Starlink. The Houthis attacking Saudi Arabia and the MBS kingdom (a top global oil producer) looking like a paper tiger!
“Acting in Danger cannot easily get out of danger
Moving too fast can bring on misfortune”
Hexagram 3, Difficulty in the Beginning, is becoming the embodiment of these scenarios. Things appear to be flaring up, and those in power right now have crossed lines. Old alliances diminish and new one form yet the fire still rages. However, there is another aspect to this hexagram that does offer either hope or an out: bringing order out of chaos. And what could that be? Well, millions of people have started early voting to express their opinions on the current situation we find ourselves in.
“Getting your will in line with heaven’s will”
“Planning for a big event to come”
Don’t wallow or get caught up in the despair of the chaos. It’s time to step back, preserve your energy, build momentum and prepare to act when the time is right. That leads me back to Democrats “measuring the drapes” as they prepare their comeback in ’27. Do I see Democrats as the saving grace to the current situation? Absolutely not! I follow the Dave Ramsey saying, “There’s not a party, a congressman, a senator, or elected official that will fix your life. YOU have to fix YOUR life.” And while Dave is correct on that point, the upcoming election does represent a shift in power, and that affects everyone in one way or another because an imminent change is on the horizon. I’m seeing lots of stories about this approaching power shift on the news front. Polls might as well be weather forecasts at this point. Just remember, though: this isn’t about who wins the midterms; it’s about a power shift, and power shifts have consequences. Difficulty in the Beginning emphasizes preserving your energy, building momentum and waiting to act. Those in the political world are doing this right now, making plans and planting seeds. November 3rd holds the answer.
Changing Line 2
There has been this recurring news story going around as of late, and its theme has been referenced in several publications:
“Younger candidates are finding it tough to break into Congress.”
The ’26 cycle had the largest number of Gen Z and Millennial candidates ever. There’s a “rage in the cage” with these two generations… OK Boomer! And while the initiative was impressive and their politics all over the map, the two-party system we endure had other plans. The machine did not take too kindly to this. Most of these candidates were mowed down (like blades of grass) in the primaries. You couldn’t find a better example of Line 2 mimicking events. Life is filled with setbacks and detours. Sometimes all you can do is wait, stay the course and not settle. Such is the case with the Gen Z/Millennial candidates of ’26. ’28 awaits you.
Transformed Hexagram 60
Hexagram 60 (Discipline, Limitations and Boundaries). It’s all on Ukraine for this one. The geopolitical order has guidelines, and if you cross them, your internet defense systems go down. This whole Starlink/shield throttling event is like the military-industrial version of de-banking. Buttons were pushed, patience was lost and examples were made. The Zelensky/Putin Eastern European dumpster fire has gone too far. The powers that be have methods, and Zelensky found this out. Energy markets and supply chains take precedence over Ukraine. Zelensky’s role (he is an actor) as the war-torn leader painted into a corner has lost its sympathy factor. Cross a boundary, pay a price! That’s exactly what he did by attacking Russian diesel refineries after being told not to. Say what you want about this useless war. I know there are opinions entrenched on both sides, but what happened this week with Zelensky and Ukraine falls clearly under the principle of Hexagram 60. The lines were drawn and the boundaries were set. The diesel issue has become a global issue that takes precedence over the Zelensky/Putin pissing contest. Zelensky tempted the tiger, and his kingdom paid the price for it. People died as a result of his taking action when restraint should have been the option. And to add insult to propaganda, he immediately pivoted to the predictable sympathy mode, which no one is buying anymore. The game has changed, and Zelensky has lost the plot. Perhaps his advisors should consult the I Ching oracle!
